a.k.a. The Morning Train Knock-off Scarf
They had this in Anthropologie, but it was white and acrylic (not my style). So I decided this would be a good project to try out the Rowan Cocoon on. It’s beautiful- so soft and fluffy and warm. This was a very comforting, calming, and mindless knit for my final crits. The Cocoon sheds a little, but not too much. The only downside is it’s a little bit heavy (I mean weight wise) on my neck. Sorry for the grey winter photos, I’ll try to get some clearer, brighter ones up soon.
The pattern ( if you can call it that) is really very basic. My interpretation is based entirely off of a not very clear photograph of it on the website, so I’m not sure how the end result compares to the one that inspired it, but I love it anyway!
This can be worked with any yarn, at any gauge, but I used 3 skeins of the Rowan Cocoon on size 8 needles, and the crochet hook I used was a 10/J.
Here’s the pattern:
1- CO 2 stitches, this is the first row.
2- increase one stitch on the left side (when it faces you) of the scarf every row from here until the rows are 28 stitches across. When you are finished, this will create a diagonal edge, so keep that in mind if this direction is confusing.
3- as you add the stitches, begin to work the cable pattern, which is:
Row 2- P2, K4, P2, K12, P2, K4, P2
Row 4- same
Row 6- P2, K4, P2, K4, Right Cross over 8 stitches, P2, K4, P2
Row 8- P2, Left cross cable over 4 sts, P2, K12, P2, Right cross cable over 4 sts, P2
Row 10- P2, K4, P2, K12, P2, K4, P2
Row 12- P2, K4, P2, Left cross over 8 sts, K4, P2, K4
this continues. So basically, the left and right cable sets cross every 8 rows, and they mirror each other, one crossing left, one crossing right. The middle cable set is a braid, where the cables cross every 6 rows.
After the scarf is worked to the desired length, begin casting off. One stitch is cast off on each row until there are only 2 stitches left. Bind off.
After that, double crochet around all 4 sides of the scarf. To get a ruffly effect, I DC’d 2 times into one row, then the next row I DC’d once into, then 2x, then 1x, continuing around.

I hope that makes sense. Send me any questions and I’ll clarify.

I knit this, and I love it.
this is beautiful! thanks for the pattern, definitely on my to knit list
I picked up the yarn today!. I can’t wait to start.. !
So lovely! Can’t wait to try it.
I just found your site via Ravelry. Love your scarf and it is very similar to a scarf I have had my eye on on the Norwegian Spirit site: http://www.spirit-eshop.com/index.php
their Buffalo Scarf. Now I may be able to replicate it. Thank you for doing this.
I found your pattern on Ravelry~ I want to make this but I’m so lost on the directions for Row 2~ -_-
