It’s January, the light is dull, and in Philadelphia, the weather is rolling between warmish and damp and coldish and windy. All in all, a depressing situation, and my tendency towards brown doesn’t really help any. Earlier this week, I needed serious cheering up. So what could be more perfect than the largest scarf you have ever seen in your life, complete with fist sized pom-poms?*
El Ginormo
(a.k.a.: The Scarf That Ate My Head, or, If Barney the Dinosaur was a scarf, then he would be all over you right now)
This isn’t really a pattern so much as guide lines.
Size: Super- Huge
Finished Measurements: 9 in by 84 in
Yarn: Twinkle Soft Chunky in Sapphire- three skeins (the real color is somewhere between the top and bottom photo)
Needles: size US 17
Gauge: 7 sts = 4 in
1- Cast on 17 stitches.
2- Work in garter stitch until satisfied with length. I always knit a scarf at least as tall as the person who will wear it. In this case, I knew I wanted to wrap it around my neck twice, so I knit about a foot extra.
3- Cast off.
4- Make 6 pom poms! I used a pom-pom form that was about 2″ in diameter to get fist- sized pom poms. To make your own forms, check this link out: http://www.kid-craft-central.com/pom-poms.html.
5- With the tail of the yarn you used to tie the pom pom together, sew three pom poms to each end of the scarf. I chose one side to be the “right side” and sewed all of the pom poms to that side, about one row up from the edge.
6- Weave in ends and block. Blocking is key, otherwise the pom poms shed like mad all over the place.
And there you are: a huge, smushy, purple scarf that is guaranteed to make you smile.
Credit where credit is due: I’ve seen a bunch of scarves with pom-poms lately, and I’m sure there’s a designer that’s made a scarf like this, but I can’t remember who right now.
* A night at the Standard Tap, but I’m about to go take care of that right now…
